Super Bowl XLIV to Feature 28 Former Senior Bowlers

 

Mobile, AL. (Feb. 4)---Sunday's Super Bowl XLIV between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts will feature a total of 28 former Senior Bowl players.  The Colts have 13 former Senior Bowlers on their active 53-man roster, while the Saints roster features 15 former Senior Bowlers.  Among the group of Senior Bowl alums that will take the field Sunday are established veterans like Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne and rookies like Saints punter Thomas Morstead.

In addition to Wayne, other Colts taking the field this Sunday that call themselves Senior Bowl alums include running back Joseph Addai, defensive end Dwight Freeney and linebacker Philip Wheeler.  Wayne and Freeney both enjoyed Pro Bowl seasons for Indianapolis this year and helped lead the Colts to their second AFC title in the last four years.

Former Senior Bowlers that now don the black and gold for the NFC Champion Saints include wide receiver Devery Henderson, offensive lineman Jonathan Stinchcomb and defensive lineman Sedrick Ellis.  Former University of Alabama standout Roman Harper, who played in the 2006 Senior Bowl, is also one of several players that played a key role in helping the Saints to their first ever Super Bowl appearance.

A total of 12 former Senior Bowlers have been named MVP of the Super Bowl, with the most recent coming in 2006 when Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward took home the honors after catching five passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' 21-10 win over Seattle.
